Create an account
Overview
This flow describes how to create an account for a patient at a facility. The account collects the charges and payments for that patient at that facility.
Pre-requisites
- The patient is registered in Care.
- You are a member of the facility that bills the patient.
- The patient has no active, open account at the facility. Care blocks a second active, open account for the same patient at the same facility.
- You have the permissions listed below.
Note: Care creates a default account for you when you add the first charge item for a patient with no active, open account. In that case, you do not need to create the account yourself.

Steps
1. Open the account list
Start from the patient or from the facility.
- From the patient: open the patient profile. Select the Accounts tab.
- From the facility: open the facility. Select Billing. Select Accounts.
2. Start the new account
Click Create Account. Care opens the account form.
3. Fill in the account details
Complete the form fields.

| Name | The name of the account. This field is mandatory. |
| Description | More detail about the account. This field is optional. |
| Status | The state of the account: Active, Inactive, On Hold, or Entered in Error. This field is mandatory. Keep the value Active for a new account. |
| Billing Status | The billing state of the account: Open, Care Completed, Billing, Closed Bad Debt, Closed Voided, Closed Completed, or Closed Combined. This field is mandatory and starts at Open. Keep the value Open for a new account. |
4. Save the account
Save the form. Care creates the account for the patient and the facility.
Expected Outcome
- Care creates the account and shows it in the account list.
- Care sets the service period start date to the current time.
- Care links the account to the patient and the facility that you created it for. You cannot change this link later.
- You can set the primary encounter afterwards, when you edit the account.
